HEY LUCAS , THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR WANTING TO BE PART OF OUR NEVER ENDING JOURNEY ON LESS. TALK. TRAVEL. MORE.

1. TELL ME A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF. HOW OLD ARE YOU? WHERE ARE YOU FROM?  WHAT IS YOUR JOB AND WHY IS TRAVELLING SO IMPORTANT TO YOU?

Yo Adrian, thanks for having me here.

I was born in Aachen on the border to Holland and Belgium, moved to Berlin in 2011, but have been moving a couple of times ever since. Hamburg, London, Cape Town, Aachen for a couple of months, due to family business, and just came back to Berlin two months ago. Phew!

Turning 34 this year and feeling fresher than ever.

You know, travelling is a sign of the times, right?!

People call themselves travellers on Instagram and some even turned this into a business.

I’m more the working guy, who is always involved in something and so travelling is often connected with that. But of course, new places mean new people, new impressions and new ideas.

I kind of feel like turning into the real me everytime I leave home, due to an environmental change that allows me to put away my roles, no expectations from people who know you in a certain way… you get me?

2. HOW OFTEN DO YOU TRAVEL PER YEAR?

Well, I never count my vacations. I rather go once a year, but then for a month or more.

Citytrips or businesswise, approximately 20-30 times.

I would love to spend more time on vacation, also have the chance to achieve intermediate goals. I think from 2016 on, I will vacation at least twice a year.

3. WHAT WAS YOUR FUNNIEST EXPERIENCE ON A JOURNEY?

A few years ago, my former girlfriend and me did a little trip to Mallorca, and when we arrived at the gate (way too early, I have to admit) there were soooo many old people already waiting, eating their homemade sandwiches, and everyone looked the same.

The classic German old tourist style with trekking vests and boots, haha.

This may not funny to others, but upon arrival at the gate, all I could say was: “Ah, ja … die Rentner sind schon da.” And it made us laugh for years.

4. HOW DO YOU DECIDE ON YOUR NEXT TRIP AND WHAT IS RELEVANT FOR YOU?

It just happens.

5. WHAT IS IMPORTANT FOR YOU ON A VACATION (RECREATION; EXPERIENCE; RELAXATION; ADVENTURE; FUN)?

First of all, I need a clean and nice place to stay.

I like managed apartments, where people take care of cleaning and changing towels daily, but where I can still do some self-catering. I like going to the markets to buy local grocery and prepare something from that.

Food is an important factor, and I would try to avoid areas, where I know there will be bad food. The rest should be a mix of everything – relaxation, some action, adventure, etc. Experience can be so multi-faceted and to me a tiny unknown smell can be super thrilling …

I like the unexpected.

6. WHICH TYPE REPRESENTS YOU BEST?

RELAXATION OR MOTION - Relaxed motion. Dude style.

COURAGE OR ANXIETY - I’m open to everything, but I reflect. Courageous, but concious.

ADVENTURE OR BORING STANDARD - I think the boring standard, but with style. Haha.

CHEAP OR EXPENSIVE - Depending on the current size of my wallet.

COLOR OR NO COLOR - Black is a color, right?!

7. DO YOU LIKE TO GO ON VACATION IN THE SPRING, SUMMER, FALL OR WINTER .... AND WHY?

Every season has its qualities. Morrocco only in winter and spring, but the Alps in summer and winter. If I can pick my favourite climate: Cape Town in February/March.

8. WHICH MOMENT OF THE DAY DO YOU LIKE THE MOST?

Definitely early mornings when everything is so clear.

Crisp, fresh air, reduced vibration, the transition from night to day, the changing colours and the rise of temperature make me feel alive.

9. ARE YOU MORE THE DISCOVERER OR DO YOU STICK TO YOUR ROUTINE WHEN DECIDING ON A TRIP?

I always discover things but not on purpose. I would say that discovery describes my routines best. I’m very attentive to details and I am very social. I like talking to strangers and I am very spontaneous.

New things happen to me all the time.

10. WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO GO ON VACATION NEXT?

Boring: Cape Town again. Just because I love the climate, the food, the nature and the fact that I am free of jetlags when I travel there. Also the past two years were quite shaking so that I’d like a little rest.

The second choice is definitely the Alps for skiing. But both will not happen, as I already have other plans for 2016 with my new publication.

11. WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

Huge question, tiny answer. Life!

12. IF I WOULD ASK YOU WHAT YOU SHOULD NEVER FORGET TO TAKE ON A TRIP, APART FROM PASSPORT, VISA ETC. , WHAT WOULD THAT BE?

My pen

13. TELL ME FIVE THINGS THAT YOU ALWAYS HAVE IN YOUR BAG ON A TRIP.

A sharp knife, noise-cancellation headphones, toothbrush, good condoms and my pen.

14. BOOK, NEWSPAPER, MAGAZINE OR CELL PHONE/IPAD/LAPTOP – WHAT REPRESENTS YOU BEST AND WHY?

Cellphone – Because I love listening to music while travelling and I can do all of the other things with it. Instagram is currently very important for me and well, yeah that says it pretty much.

15. WHICH MOMENT DO YOU REMEMBER MOST WHEN YOU THINK BACK ON YOUR LIFE’S JOURNEY?

There are so many moments that I can’t tell. But I often think of the returning moments of strolling around through the airport (no matter which) and listening to my current favourite playlist.

16. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE CITIES?

Let me answer this from 1-5:

1-3. Cape Town

4. Berlin/London

5. Munich/Vienna

But, I actually prefer the countryside.

17. IN WHICH CITY OR PART OF THE WORLD DO YOU FEEL MOST AT HOME?

Impossible to answer, as it does not depend on a place. I’m person-bound and right now, I have my life in Berlin.

18. WHERE DO YOU LIVE AND WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST IN YOUR CITY?

Berlin, as mentioned before, and what I love.

Well, I think it’s the fact that I know my ways, have some good people around me and I need 15 minutes to the airport. Also it’s quite affordable in comparison to similar places around the globe. But to be honest, I don’t see myself here in ten years.

I guess I’ll stay for a couple of years and take my future family to a nice place more south.

19. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO LIVE THERE?

I found my home here.

20. IF YOU WOULD COMPARE YOUR CITY TO MUSIC, WHICH KIND OF MUSIC WOULD DESCRIBE YOUR CITY BEST?

Berlin is special as it is so many cities in one city.

Even if people think of Techno when talking about Berlin I think Berlin is Punk.

21. WHICH MUSIC ARE YOU LISTENING TO RIGHT NOW?

I always listen to every genre, even though 2015 was Rap.

But more the rappers, who discovered MDMA, like Childish Gambino, Kendrick, Wiz Khalifa and so on … While we talk, Grieg’s lyric pieces are playing.

22. EXPLAIN YOUR LIFESTYLE IN FIVE WORDS?

Essentialism, quality, constant change, beauty, ideas

23. WHAT WOULD BE A PERFECT DAY FOR YOU?

Waking up with sunlight, no alarm

Silence for five Minutes or sex

Coffee and a snack

Sports or sex

Eat rich

Working in my business

Meeting for business

Preparation for the next day

30 minutes time off

Meeting friends or partner

Dinner together

Sleep early or go crazy all night

Repeat 1

24. HOW IMPORTANT ARE FOOD AND THE TASTE OF SOMETHING NEW TO YOU?

I really don’t need something new all the time, but rather focus on the quality of the ingredients and the way of preparation. Of course, new is nice, but only if really good, and that’s something you can compare to music. There is food and there is good food, no matter if old or new.

Let’s say “bread” for example - almost a no-brainer. Some people eat it every day, and still, there is such a huge variety and quality spectrum of this standard product that after 33 years on this planet, I can still eat a bread like never before, right?

25. NAME FIVE OF YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANTS. THEY CAN BE ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD.

Berber and Q - London

Nußbaumerin - Berlin

Sauerbratenpalast - Aachen

Chicken Tikka Masala booth - Cape Town Bo’Kaap (weekends only)

Café de la Poste - Marrakesh

26. WHAT IS YOUR PHILOSOPHY OF LIFE?

I believe in evolution, in beinge thankful for the great gift of life, in taking what you want and pay respect to others.

27. WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS?

I will grow my business instead of my hair and I’m going to be the Tom Ford of bald men.

Being on my own for some two or three years, and, then, hopefully find the person to have a family with. I love the idea of me being a father and sharing my life with my wife and children.

Major plan: being able to afford spending lots of time with them and opening the doors my kids want to go through.

28. IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING IN THE WORLD – WHAT WOULD THAT BE?

Who am I to change the world?!

Not that I don’t have visions, actually I have many.

But, like I said, I believe in evolution and so I believe in nature and its power. Nature is so huge and humans are only a piss in the wind. Means that changing the world to me is not a human task, even if our ego suggests doing so.

The world is in constant change, and we are just part of it.

So my answer is: I would change nothing. Life is beautiful.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH LUCAS FOR YOUR TIME AND THE INTERESTING INTERVIEW.

ALL THE BEST TO YOUR FUTURE PLANS AND MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU WHEREEVER YOU WILL BE.
